somatic experiencing; what is it?
Somatic experiencing is a technique devised by Peter Levine to support the body and its innate capacity to navigate through trauma and into rest and safety.
This work relies on the Polyvagal theory which looks at the Autonomic and Sympathetic nervous system. This system is designed to help us navigate our response to threat. If we have not been able to get through threat and to rest and safety we hold an incomplete response in our system.
Somatic experiencing is designed to help us engage with these incomplete responses gently and sensitively.
This approach is gentle, doing all we can to support our systems to be strong, functioning well and providing us with a clear pathway to safety. When you work with me using somatic experiencing we will do some talking and a lot of listening to your body and your experience.
It's different to other methods of trauma treatment in that we don't have to talk and re-experience the trauma. Somatic Experiencing is gentle, and uses the body's expression and language.
what will a session look like?
If you live in my home town we will work here in my studio. If you live elsewhere then we will work online.
In the first session i will take a history, ask you questions and you can ask me questions too. We will probably have time to do a little SE work so you get familiar with the process.
Sessions last for an hour and we will talk a little first each time and then look at what your body has to offer up.
Most work will be done sitting although people have ended up moving around and there are exercises we can do that may involve standing and moving.
You might find that we work differently each time, finding different ways to engage with your system or learning different things each time we check in.
What will be consistent is gentleness, kindness and building a sense of safety.
Trusting what your body offers up is important- often seemingly irrelevant things need to be tended to before bigger things can happen.
I recommend having at least 6 sessions so that there is continuity and a chance for deep change to happen.
Sessions are $100 per session.
