Soulmap journaling - evening sessions.
Soulmap journaling is a process i have been developing for 5 years - first with myself and then with circles of women.
The process uses the page as a window on the unconscious - creating a space for direction and understanding to arise.
Using courage and mixed media as the tools this process is designed to help you find your way with whatever you are going through.
HOW DOES IT WORK
The process is an ongoing cycle. We use a deck of divination cards for guidance, each card we draw giving us a theme for the week. Our initial circle is a discussion about how the theme lands with us and anything it provokes or inspires in us. Then i do a demonstration of a technique you might like to try and then we work in silence on the page. We finish with a circle discussion on what came up for us while we were working.
This process is generative and as we work with the unconscious often another's work will provide insight and wisdom for us.
WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS FROM SCRAPBOOKING?
This work is not about making something look pretty or even pleasing - it is process over product.
That means it is not what the finished piece looks like that counts rather what you experienced while you were working. The work requires us to quiet the inner critic, let go of what we think things should look like and tend to what is happening.
THE THREE GOLDEN RULES.
All my workshops have very clear boundaries and this work is no exception. All participants must agree to the boundaries before attending to ensure the integrity and safety of the group.
Beyond that I work with 3 rules;
Trust what arises. Turn up bravely. Be Kind to yourself.
They sound easy and sometimes they are damn hard.
WHY USE PAINT?
Our inner lives are mysterious and deep. Creativity allows us to use the language of the unconscious to access wisdom and knowledge that our tricky thinking minds are unable to access.
The process over product and the three golden rules strengthen muscles that we use off the page in challenging the unhelpful paradigms we live in such as unworthiness, being good, martyrdom etc. They all turn up on the page and in the process sooner or later and we get a chance to practise another way in a safe and supportive environment.
BUT I'M NOT AN ARTIST...
That's lucky. Artists often have the hardest time as they have a lot more rigid thinking and rules around how things should look to overcome. Having a willingness to try and courage to keep going is much more valuable in this work than art skills. Some artists have used it to regain a sense of playfulness and connection with their product over process pieces.
WHAT DO I NEED?
Openness to try, clothes you don't mind getting dirty and an art journal - i can sell you one of the type i love to work in for cost if you are keen. ($12) Many people like the ring-bound sketch books but it is really a personal preference.
All other supplies are provided but you are welcome to bring tools you love too.
