storytelling

"All we are is a big sack of stories"  Tanya Batt.

I believe in the immense power of story to heal and to harm.
I also believe that story has been handed down to us by those who have gone before as a way of learning the ropes of this tricky business of being human.  From the old stories we learn the ropes, see where we need to beware, see where to look for treasure.

The art of storytelling used to be something people did as a matter of course.  Cold wet winter's night?  Sit around the fire and tell story.  Children bored and fractious?
Tell a story.

But the art of story is dwindling.  We rely on Hollywood and TV to tell our stories.  The power of being able to shape a story is something less children are learning by heart.  The transmission of story from the heart of the storyteller, to the heart of the listener is too precious to loose.  Know how to tell a story? You know how to fashion an essay.  Know how to tell a story?  You know how to look at a problem from different angles. know how to engage a listener, know how to explain yourself.

I love engaging with story in all kinds of situations.

In conjunction with Tuatara Design Store in Whangarei I am offering up Storycircle - a monthly group where we honour story.  Tell story, listen to story, invite story in to amaze and soften us.  Each month we have a theme - this month our theme is Hands.  We meet on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 5:30- 6:30 pm on Bank Street.  Entry is by koha.  Nau mai haere mai.!
